Closed Die Forging

Closed die forging is a complex process and involves the hammering of preformed metal blanks within the dies to get a three dimensional negative of the part to be made. The process is used to make an endless variety of 3-D shapes and complex parts for various industries. They play a vital role in different economic sectors such as electronics, semiconductor, construction, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and food processing.

How Closed Die Forging Works

There are two dies for closed die forging, which are top die and bottom die. Both of them have the pattern of part shape. Move the top die and extrude the heated round bar downward to make the metal flow into each part of the mold under the action of pressure, and a small amount of excess metal will flow out, forming a thin flash. After cooling, the flash can not only organize the metal outflow, but also act as a buffer to reduce the impact of the upper die on the lower die and prevent the die from cracking. Finally, we will get raw parts after the flash is cutted.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Compared with casting, forging has its special advantages:

1. In the case of the same material, the mechanical properties of forgings are better than those of castings.
2. The forgings strength is higher and the fatigue resistance is stronger.
3. The forgings has better compactness.
4. There are no internal defects and surface defects.
5. Fast production speed, high efficiency, suitable for mass production of products.
6. The product quality is stable.

Forgings also have it’s own disadvantages:

1. Although forgings can produce complex shapes, compared with casting, many shapes are still can’t be forged
2. The cost of die is much higher than that of castings, and the die is the key to the forging.
3. If the production quantity is small, the production cost-effectiveness is poorer.
